DVD Forum to Devise China-specific HD DVD Disc Standard

As requested by the OMNERC (Optical Memory National Engineering Research Center) and the CETC (China Electronics Technology Group Corporation), Chinese DVD Forum has announced a plan to devise a China-specific HD DVD disc standard, which differs from the global one in its modulation codec. The China-specific version will employ FSM (Four-to-Six Modulation) instead of the global ETM (Eight-to-Twelve Modulation). This China-only HD DVD disc format is considered helpful in fighting piracy problems in China and is expected to be completed in December 2006.
